AFCW 2 Wrens Nest 1 (JW Hunt Cup)

AFC Wulfrunians progressed to the third round of the JW Hunt Cup following a hard fought 2-1 second round win. After being behind at half time, Wulfs battled back with a strong second half showing to knock out Wrens Nest.

The visitors had the first chance after just seven minutes. Todd Warner found Jake Mullen in the area, but his attempted lob was held by Danny Tipton.

They took the lead five minutes later as Gareth Hadden picked the ball up on the edge of the area and fired home, with help from the post.

Warner had the chance to double Wrens Nest’s lead as he went one-on-one, but Tipton came to the edge of the area to make a great save with his body.

At the other end, new signing Saimonas Burksaitis had a sight of goal from twelve yards out but he fire over the bar under a strong challenge from a back-tracking defender.

Wulfrunians came out of the blocks quickly after half-time, as Craig Gregg went through on the right, only for his shot to be tipped away by Aaron Morris.

Jake Sedgemore then grabbed the equaliser for Wulfs after 49 minutes. His curling free kick from the left evaded everybody and looped into the top corner.

Another set piece led to the hosts taking the lead just six minutes later as Scott Stevenson’s free kick was deflected before being turned into his own net by Sean Wynne.

Gregg should have added a third as he latched onto a knock down from a Stevenson cross, only to fire over from close range.

Wulfs held on through the rest of the second half without much trouble to make progress. They now move onto their next game, which sees them return to league action as they take the trip to Alvechurch.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Jones, Burd (Talbot 67), Sedgemore, Hill, Skedgel, Stevenson (Perks 78), Palmer, Gregg (Davies 78), Burksaitis, Robertson.
