AFCW 0 Lye Town 1

A battling performance from AFC Wulfrunians was not enough as they suffered a home defeat to Lye Town. Matt Johnson struck the late winner for the visitors in a game where neither side had many chances.

Lye had the first chance of the game, after 11 minutes, as Chris Russell’s shot flew across the face of goal where Ricky Anslow managed to poke the ball to Danny Tipton after he miscued his effort, despite having almost the whole goal to aim at.

Some good work from Jordan Perks could have seen Wulfs go ahead with their first chance. He won the ball high up the pitch and beat two players before laying off to Jake Sedgemore, whose shot was just wide.

Sedgemore was on hand at the other hand of the pitch to deny Lye a goal. James Spray’s shot was pushed upwards by Tipton; leaving Anslow with the chance to finish into an empty net, only for the Wulfs skipper to hook the ball away from right under his nose to clear it.

Wulfrunians’ best chance of the game came with 16 minutes remaining- Jamie King curled a free kick in from the right and it was flicked on by John Hill, but his header cannoned off the crossbar before being cleared.

Spray had a great chance as he got a free kick on the edge of the area, but his driven effort gave Tipton no troubles as it flew wide.

With just five minutes left, Lye took the lead. Another free kick from Spray caused Tipton more trouble this time. The powerful effort bounced just before the ‘keeper, which meant that he couldn’t keep hold of it, with Johnson being the first to react as he fired in the rebound from close range.

After this unfortunate result, Wulfrunians will now move onto next Saturday’s game against Basford United- where they will look to avenge a 2-1 defeat from earlier in the season in their last game before Christmas.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Perks, Howells, Sedgemore, Hill, Asbury, Rose-Laing (Robertson 68), Palmer, Gregg (Bood 59), Stevenson (Haynes 68), King.
