Heanor Town 3 AFCW 0 (FA Vase)

AFC Wulfrunians slipped out of the FA Vase at the first round stage at the hands of an impressive Heanor Town side. Two goals in the first half and one straight after the interval were enough to send Wulfs out.

Nathan Rose-Laing had the first chance for Wulfs, but his effort from the edge of the area fell wide of the post.

The hosts’ first chance came after 24 minutes, Courey Grantham went through on goal but Jono Brown stood tall and caught his attempted chip.

Just a minute later, Heanor took the lead. Greg Marriott crossed in from the right and Gary Ricketts connected with it at the near post to fire home.

Their lead was doubled 10 minutes before the break. Ricketts was this time the provider, as he headed down a cross which Marc Styzyzewski poked home from close range.

Paulo Piliero had another chance for the hosts on the stroke of half time. His floating header almost snuck into the top corner as it struck the post before falling wide.

Just a minute after the break, Heanor added their third. Grantham delivered a cross from deep and skipper Kieran Debrouwer managed to force the ball in at the back post.

Brown made a good save to keep Heanor out after 54 minutes. He got across his goal to excellently tip Gerard Moran’s shot away.

Debrouwer had a chance to add his second just two minutes later. Ricketts headed a cross down to him, but his powerful strike was well turned away by Brown.

Wulfs had one final chance to add a consolation with 15 minutes remaining. Nick Haynes crossed from the right to Jamie King, who fired just wide of the post after chesting it down.

Wulfrunians will now look to getting a better result as they return to league action on Saturday when they host Coventry Sphinx.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Brown, Perks (Haynes 35), Jones, Sedgemore, Hill, Talbot, Howells, Rose-Laing (Ray 45), Gregg, Stevenson, King (Thompson 72).
