AFCW 2 Coventry Sphinx 4

A poor second half performance from AFC Wulfrunians saw them condemned to a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Coventry Sphinx. Despite Wulfs being ahead at half time, four second half goals from the visitors helped them to victory.

Nathan Rose-Laing did put the hosts ahead after just seven minutes. Scott Stevenson crossed from the left and Rose-Laing timed his run perfectly to side-foot past the ‘keeper.

A marauding run by John Hill almost saw Wulfrunians double their lead. He dribbled from the half way line, played a one-two with Andy Thompson but Carl O’Neil managed to push it away.

Sphinx were almost level just two minutes after the break. Jono Brown couldn’t keep hold of Rickie Cutting’s cross but luckily for him Josh Jones hooked the ball off the line before it rolled in.

Just a minute later, the visitors did level as Kiam Galdins’ cross was turned in by Jacob Dodds with the outside of his foot.

Wulfrunians retook the lead after 61 minutes. Thompson used his pace to get behind the defence on the right; before squaring the ball to Jamie King, who fired home despite a strong hand by O’Neil.

This lasted just one minute, however, as Cutting levelled matters once again, the Sphinx midfielder running on to a loose ball before firing home.

The visitors then went ahead for the first time in the match when Luke Downes’ free kick evaded all of the Wulfs defenders, leaving Ashley Wilks an easy header past Brown.

An unfortunate slip by Brown allowed Sphinx to round off their victory in the final minute. Kyle Jaynes broke clear and easily lobbed the ball over Brown, who had slipped as he rushed out to challenge the substitute.

Next up for Wulfs is a trip to Dunkirk next weekend as they look to bounce back from their first league defeat since September.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Brown, Perks, Jones (Robertson 75), Sedgemore, Hill, Talbot, Gregg, Rose-Laing (Haynes 67 ),  Thompson, King, Stevenson (Ray 82).
