AFCW 1 Westfields 1

AFC Wulfrunians and Westfields fought out a high octane, high quality 1-1 draw at the Castlecroft Stadium. Andy Thompson fired Wulfs into an early lead but Nathaniel Lewars earned the visitors a deserved point with an equaliser on the hour mark.

Both teams started brightly but it was Wulfs who took a 6th minute lead when Thompson pounced on a misplaced pass and bore down on goal before firing past the helpless keeper.

Westfields hit back with some strong direct football but Wulfs’ defence held strong while they played some attractive football of their own.

There was disappointment just before the half hour mark when Westfields centre half Joel Edwards came out of a 50-50 challenge on a stretcher.

The visitors went close to an equaliser when Craig Jones’ corner was flicked on at the near post by Jamie Cuss and headed goalwards by Zac Sirrell but Dave Howells was well place on the line to clear the danger.

Just before the interval, Wulfs had a great chance to extend their lead when Nathan Rose-Laing climes highest to meet Craig Gregg’s right wing cross but his header flew just over the bar from close range.

The equaliser Westfields craved finally came in the 60th minute when Nathaniel Lewars picked the ball up 22 yards out and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.

The game continued to flow from end to end but it was Wulfs who had the best chance to win it when Jordan Perks sent in a great cross from the right and substitute Jamie King volleyed over from close range with the goal gaping.

In the end a draw was probably the right result and Wulfs now go on to a Tuesday night clash with Wrens Nest at the Castlecroft Stadium in the JW Hunt Cup.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Perks, Howells, Sedgemore, Hill, Talbot, Gregg, Rose-Laing, Thompson (King 51), Stevenson, Palmer (Jones 70).
