AFCW 1 Stourport Swifts 2 (League Cup)

AFC Wulfrunians slipped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat in the League Cup at the hands of Stourport Swifts. Neither side created many chances but Swifts made better work of the chances that they had.

The first chance of the game fell to Stourport’s Calvin Dinsley; he saw his shot from the edge of the area tipped away by Jono Brown.

The visitors took the lead after 27 minutes. Ryan Talbot headed against his own post under pressure from a corner and Jamie Willets poked home amidst the scramble in the six-yard box.

Scott Stevenson almost provided an instant reply for Wulfs. His curling long range effort was brilliantly tipped round the post by the ‘keeper.

Stourport had a chance to double their lead after 39 minutes when Ashely Parsons-Smith ran clear, but he poked the ball just the wrong side of the post.

Six minutes before the break Wulfrunians were level. A poor clearance from Willets fell to Mike Robertson, who curled the ball past the out-of-position ‘keeper.

Stourport retook the lead 10 minutes after the break when Dinsley’s free kick was met by Kevin Spencer ahead of Brown and he then knocked it in from close range.

Craig Gregg could have levelled for Wulfs. He broke clear on the left hand side but his powerful shot ran across goal and ended up just wide of the post.

Lewis Pountney had a chance to extend his side’s lead, but his attempted chip of Brown ended up going landing on the roof of the net as it went over.

With Swifts moving onto the third round of the competition, Wulfrunians now switch their attentions to Saturday’s league game as they host Westfields.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Brown, Ray, Jones, Palmer, Hill (Rose-Laing 18), Talbot, Robertson (Thompson 68), Howells, Gregg (Bood 80), Stevenson, King.
