AFCW 1 Rocester 0

A last-gasp Andy Thompson goal secured a miraculous win for 10-man AFC Wulfrunians as they hosted Rocester. It was a true game of two halves, with neither side creating chances in the first half but the game burst into life after the break.

Jordan Perks threaded a great ball through for Thompson two minutes after the break that put him in behind. The ‘keeper came rushing out and got a solid hand to it to force it wide.

Thompson then became the provider as he pulled back to Jamie King from the byline, only for King’s shot from close range to be easily saved.

Wulfrunians were reduced to 10 men after 64 minutes. Richard Palmer brought down Josh Williams on the edge of the area and received his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

The visitors subsequently moved onto the front foot and should have been ahead when Nick Ward burst through. Jono Brown did well to push the shot away and Jones threw himself in front of the follow up.

A quick Wulfs counter-attack saw King put Thompson through one-on-one, but he couldn’t keep his composure as he placed his shot wide.

With eight minutes left, the visitors were also reduced to 10 men. Skipper Carl Allen got a second yellow in the space of five minutes for a foul on Thompson.

Rocester thought they had won it in injury-time when Dan Brown flicked Rob Ritchie-Smith’s corner towards goal, but Brown pulled off a great save to push it onto the bar.

Thompson finally struck the winner with just seconds remaining. Substitute Scott Stevenson went past two players, his shot was saved but Thompson was there to pounce on the rebound as he fired home.

Wulfrunians have their defence to thank for this win as they did well to keep at the visitors at bay right to the end. They’ll look to continue this form into Tuesday’s League Cup tie with Stourport Swifts.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Brown, Perks, Jones, Sedgemore, Hill, Talbot, Gregg (Stevenson 69), Rose-Laing (Howells 67), Thompson, King, Palmer.
