AFCW 0 Heanor Town 0 (FA Vase)

A resolute defensive performance and a lack of fortune in front of goal meant that AFC Wulfrunians were unlucky not to come out of this fiery FA Vase tie with Heanor Town victorious. Wulfs couldn’t quite grab the goal they needed, despite extra time being played, and the fixture will now be replayed on Tuesday.

The hosts had two chances in quick succession to open the game. Jamie King saw his shot pushed wide by Ian Deakin at the near post and then some good linkup play between David Howells and Nathan Rose-Laing saw the latters shot well saved.

Heanor skipper Kieran Debrouwer was denied after 22 minutes as his shot took a deflection to wrong foot Jono Brown, but he leapt across goal to keep it out.

Debrouwer had another chance just after the break, he beat two players as he cut inside only to be denied again as Brown flew to his left to keep the curling effort out of the top corner.

A floating effort from Craig Gregg should have put Wulfs ahead after 67 minutes. He picked the ball up on the left and tried to loft it over Deakin; but he managed to scramble across his goal and claw it away.

The last clear chance of normal time fell to Kieran Wells, but he couldn’t convert as he went one-on-one due to Brown’s save with his body.

In the first period of extra time, substitute Mike Robertson saw his powerful effort from the edge of the area pushed onto the post by the ‘keeper as Wulfs continued to apply pressure.

With just a few minutes to go, a Jake Sedgemore free kick saw John Hill with a chance to score; only for Deakin to pull off a double save to deny Hill’s original effort and then to stop the rebound to keep the game scoreless.

Wulfrunians will look to continue their solid defensive play- having conceded just three goals in their last five games- in the replay on Tuesday to progress to the Second Round of the FA Vase.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Brown, Perks, Jones, Sedgemore, Hill, Talbot, Howells (Robertson 76), Rose-Laing (Haynes 105), Gregg (Thompson 80), Stevenson, King.
