Bardon Hill 3 AFC Wulfrunians 3 (FA Vase)

AFC Wulfrunians battled back from two goals down, only to be pegged back late on in a thrilling FA Vase clash with Bardon Hill that went all the way to extra time. Wulfs went ahead in extra time after levelling in the second half, only for the hosts to equalise and force a replay on Tuesday.

Bardon took the lead in the very first minute, Rich Hanslow made a great run behind the defence to latch on to Louis Keenan’s diagonal ball and calmly slotted it under Jono Brown’s feet.

Within 10 minutes, the hosts had doubled their lead. Steve Hart took advantage of a mistake at the back for Wulfs to find himself in space in the area and he fired into the bottom corner.

A bold change in formation by Wulfrunians’ manager Steve Palmer had the desired effect as Jake Sedgemore pulled a goal back after 28 minutes. Dan Parker was brought down in the area and Wulfs’ skipper made no mistake in converting from the spot.

Steve Armson had an excellent chance to extend the home side’s lead on the stroke of half time. He latched onto a cross from Hart after some great movement but fired over from close range.

It was Sedgemore who levelled for the visitors, again from the penalty spot. This time it was Jordan Perks who was brought down in the box and Sedgemore showed great composure to stroke the ball home.

Andy Thompson completed a remarkable turnaround for Wulfs as he put them ahead six minutes into extra time. He linked up excellently with Craig Gregg before rolling the ball past the ‘keeper to cap off a wonderful move.

Thompson had the chance to put the game to bed in the second period of extra time, King’s corner was bobbling in the area and Thompson’s effort was somehow deflected onto the post by a Bardon defender.

It was not to be for Wulfrunians, however, as Bardon snatched their own equaliser from the spot with three minutes to go. Dave Asbury was adjudged to have handled in the area and subsequently received his second yellow card. Hanslow stepped up to take and calmly added his second of the day to force the game to a replay on Tuesday night.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Brown, Jones (Asbury 23), Talbot (Gregg 23), Sedgemore, Hill, Parker (McDonald 52), Perks, Howells, Thompson, Stevenson, King.
