AFCW 2 Solihull Moors 1 (B’ham Senior Cup)

AFC Wulfrunians pulled off an upset in the Birmingham Senior Cup as they defeated Vanarama Conference North side Solihull Moors. Jamie King grabbed both goals for Wulfs with Liam Daly pulling one back for Solihull.

Former Walsall man Richard Taundry had the first chance for the visitors. His low free kick was well held by Jono Brown.

Some good link up play between King and Andy Thompson gave Wulfs a good opportunity early on. They exchanged passes on the edge of the Solihull area but Thompson saw his straightforward shot saved.

King broke the deadlock 41 minutes in, a great ball from deep by Jordan Perks put him behind the defence and he showed great composure to slot past Tony Breeden under pressure.

He grabbed his second to double the lead just three minutes later. Perks won the ball in the visitors’ half and it fell to King, who fired it low and hard past Breeden from the edge of the area.

Solihull pulled one back after 58 minutes. Darryl Knights’ cross was played across the face of goal by Story, allowing Liam Daly to poke home.

Knight was unfortunate not to level after 73 minutes. He struck a powerful free kick, after Ryan Talbot had brought down Aitor Espejo on the edge of the area, but it rattled the cross bar before going over.

An excellent block on the line by Talbot prevented substitute Ryan Beswick from levelling. He stretched to meet a Story cross but Talbot kept it out with a last-ditch dive on the line to get his body behind it.

The visitors had one final chance with just a minute to go. Wulfs failed to deal with a corner and the ball fell to Michael Nottingham just two yards out, but his glancing header went just wide.

Wulfrunians’ next game sees them travel to Rocester on Saturday for a return to league action.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Brown, Perks, Jones (Hill 81), Rose-Laing, Talbot, Asbury, Haynes, Howells, Thompson (Gregg 62), King, Robertson (Palmer 62).
