AFCW 2 Causeway United 1

AFC Wulfrunians completed an unbeaten October as they defeated Causeway United thanks to goals from John Hill and Nathan Rose-Laing.

Wulfrunians’ first big chance of the game came after 20 minutes. Jake Sedgemore’s free kick found Ryan Talbot on the left, but his shot was well pushed away by Tom Turner.

Another Sedgemore free kick just two minutes later provided another chance; this time Hill’s acrobatic effort struck the bar before being hooked away.

Skipper Arron Lloyd had the visitors’ first chance of the evening- he broke clear of the defence but Jono Brown did well to tip the shot round the post.

John Hill put Wulfs ahead after 39 minutes. He picked up Craig Gregg’s cross from the left and his powerful effort found its way into the top corner despite Turner’s efforts to push it away.

Hill had another chance just after the break. Scott Stevenson’s corner was dropped by the ‘keeper straight onto his head, but his instinctive header went into the side netting.

Sam Tye had a chance to level when he got the ball in the Wulfs area, but Brown saved well to put it behind.

Wulfs had two chances in quick succession to extend the lead. First, Thompson’s cross was poked wide at the near post by King then Thompson himself shot wide after David Howells had put him through.

Causeway finally levelled after 75 minutes through their captain. Lloyd went past three players before rifling his left-footed effort into the top corner.

The hosts retook the lead with just two minutes to go. Another Sedgemore free kick was poked home by Rose-Laing amidst a scramble in the goal mouth after Turner spilt the ball.

Wulfs survived one final push from the visitors as Tye’s shot after cutting inside from the right was well held by Brown.

Wulfrunians will look to continue their good run of form into November, and this begins on Saturday as they host Heanor Town in the F.A. Vase.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Brown, Perks (Jones 80), Talbot, Sedgemore, Hill, Skedgel, Thompson, Howells, Gregg, Stevenson (Rose-Laing 60), King
