AFCW 1 Bardon Hill 0 (FA Vase)

A fantastic strike from Andy Thompson made the difference as AFC Wulfrunians progressed to the first round of the FA Vase after a replay against Bardon Hill.

It was the visitors who had the first chance of the game, as Steve Hart’s cross from the left was headed just wide by Andy Fell.

Wulfrunians then struck back with a couple of early chances of their own. Scott Stevenson beat two players before firing straight at Tom Gutteridge and Mike Robertson fired past the post after Wulfs broke quickly.

Thompson gave the hosts the lead after 11 minutes. Robertson and Stevenson linked up well before Stevenson found Thompson on the edge of the area. Whilst holding off a defender, he turned and fired a great effort in off the bar with his weaker foot.

A mistake in the Bardon defence almost allowed Wulfs to double their lead. David Howells’ ball over the top was headed straight to Thompson by a Bardon’s Josh Eggington. He rounded Gutteridge and squared to Gregg- whose shot was well tipped over.

Hart almost drew his side level after 28 minutes, he cut in from the left but his shot from the edge grazed the bar.

Ryan Pirrie tried to catch Jono Brown unaware as he tried a long-range effort, but the curling shot struck the post and then fell wide.

Jake Sedgemore could have doubled Wulfs’ lead halfway through the second half. He met Stevenson’s short corner but his curling effort went just over.

A quick break saw Gregg’s cross fall to substitute Jamie King at the back post, but his weak effort was blocked on the line and cleared.

Chris King was denied a great equaliser for the away side by a fantastic flying save by Brown. King’s shot looked destined for the top corner but Brown leapt to push it onto the bar with just three minutes remaining

Wulfrunians now move onto the first round of this competition, where they will face Derbyshire side Heanor Town on November 1st.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Brown, Howells (Ray 89), Talbot, Sedgemore, Hill, Asbury, Thompson (King 45), Rose-Laing (Haynes 70), Gregg, Stevenson, Robertson.
