AFCW 4 Loughborough University 1

A sublime performance from Jamie King helped AFC Wulfrunians as they came from behind to record a convincing 4-1 victory against Loughborough University.

King grabbed a hat-trick as he struck a trio of fantastic goals, as well as providing the assist for Andy Thompson’s goal, after Callum Williams had put Loughborough ahead early on.

Williams put the visitors in front after Will Poole broke down the right-hand side and delivered a ball in for Williams to slot home from eight yards out.

Wulfrunians equalised after 23 minutes as King struck the first of his hat trick. Jordan Perks played the ball into his feet 30 yards out and he effortlessly rolled past the defender before firing his shot into the corner.

Jake Sedgemore almost put Wulfs in front three minutes before half-time. He lined up a free kick from the edge of the area after Josh Jones had been fouled but saw it go over after it crashed off the crossbar.

Some more great work by King allowed Thompson to give his side the lead straight after the interval. He picked the ball up in his own half and powered all the way to the edge of Loughborough’s area where he squared to Thompson, who turned the defender before finishing calmly.

Thompson returned the favour after 68 minutes as he provided the assist for King’s second of the game. Thompson played the ball just in front of King on the left, which allowed him to rifle his shot into the top corner, leaving the ‘keeper with no chance.

The winger’s hat trick was completed after 75 minutes; Jones’ cross from the right took a deflection and ran all the way to King at the back post- who fired across the ‘keeper into the bottom corner.

There could have been a fourth for King as Wulfrunians controlled the game in the dying minutes. Substitute Nic Haynes set him up on the left but his powerful effort rattled off the post before rolling away to safety.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Brown, Jones, Talbot, Sedgemore, Hill, Parker, Perks (McDonald 55), Thompson, Gregg (Haynes 78), Stevenson, King.
