Long Eaton United 2 AFCW 2

AFC Wulfrunians twice came from behind to secure a point away at Long Eaton United. Jermaine Hollis and Ben Watkiss had put the home side ahead in each half but Scott Stevenson and Jake Sedgemore restored parity on both occasions.

Long Eaton were first to show with Jermaine Palmer firing high and wide in the second minute before Wulfs went close when Nathan Rose-Laing headed millimetres wide from eight yards out.

It was the home side who broke the deadlock in the 26th minute after winning possession in midfield. The ball was played out right to Theo Smith and his deep cross was headed in powerfully at the far post by Jermaine Hollis.

Wulfs fought hard to get back into the game but it was the home side who went closest to adding to the scoreline with Smith twice going close, first when he fired a shot against the outside of the post and then when he had a shot well saved by Jono Brown at close range.

The inspiration Wulfs needed came on the 62nd minute when Scott Stevenson netted an equaliser. Jake Webb’s low cross was pushed away by keeper Richard Hankey and Stevenson showed great composure to cut back past a defender before firing home.

It was all Wulfs now and they almost took the lead when Craig Gregg beat the keeper to a ball over the top and rounded him before rolling a shot from a narrow angle across the face of goal.

Gregg then went closer still when he headed a David Howells cross inches over the bar from close range.

After making all of the running, Wulfs were hit with a sucker punch seven minutes from time when a Long Eaton corner was headed out to Blair Anderson and his left wing cross was headed home by Ben Watkiss.

Wulfs hit back immediately and netted a second equaliser within sixty seconds when Jake Sedgemore fired directly in from a free kick on the corner of the area after Jake Webb had been fouled.

Both sides had late chances to win the game but in the end had to settle for a point apiece.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Brown, Jones, Howells, Palmer (Sedgemore 34), Hill, Skedgel, King (Webb 53), Rose-Laing, Gregg, Stevenson, Robertson (Perks 62).
