Causeway United 1 AFCW 0

AFC Wulfrunians fell to a 1-0 defeat against Causeway United in a game where neither side frequently threatened the other’s goalkeeper. It was Reece Shilvock who eventually struck the winning goal for the home side.

Wulfrunians had the first chance of the game after just four minutes. Scott Stevenson’s corner floated to the back post but Nathan Rose-Laing poked it into the side netting with a first-time effort.

Craig Gregg had a fantastic opportunity just two minutes later. Mike Robertson headed the ball across goal to Gregg but, with more than half the goal to aim at, he fired straight at the ‘keeper.

The hosts had a great chance of their own after 20 minutes as Julian Triana volleyed from the edge of the area- but Danny Tipton was equal to it as he pulled off the save with his feet.

Stevenson’s curling free kick saw Wulfs almost take the lead. He beat both the wall and the ‘keeper, but was denied by the post. The rebound fell to Mike Robertson, who saw his hooked effort cleared off the line.

After some promising build-up play to begin the second half, Shilvock picked the ball up inside Wulfs’ area but he failed to threaten as he pushed his shot across goal.

Causeway should have gone ahead after 54 minutes when Aaron Lloyd’s cross across the face of goal was fired over by Triana as he flew in to connect with it from close range.

A mix up in the Wulfrunians defence allowed Causeway to finally take the lead after 72 minutes. A ball behind the defence was not cleared, which allowed Shilvock to nod a weak header past Tipton.

Wilson Maghangani had the chance to double the hosts’ lead deep into added time, but his volley was well held by Tipton.

Wulfrunians were left with nothing to show for the large amounts of possession they had as they couldn’t quite unlock the Causeway defence to create a clear opening. They now host Alvechurch in the Extra Preliminary Round of the F.A. Cup this weekend.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Jones (Embrey 61), Howells, Sedgemore, Hill, Brindley, Webb, Rose-Laing, Gregg, Stevenson (Thompson 71), Robertson (McDonald 61).
