Brocton 2 AFCW 2

AFC Wulfrunians managed to come out with a point from their Bank Holiday matchup against Brocton, despite injuries to Jake Webb and Danny Tipton and the home side missing a penalty. Wulfs twice took the lead, only to be pegged back by equalizers on both occasions.

The visitors fired out the blocks, with Mike Robertson seeing his shot turned behind after an excellent cross by Chris Lait. The resulting corner was headed onto the post by a Brocton defender before Andy Thompson fired just wide.

Edward Booth had Brocton’s best chance of the half after 13 minutes- he fired onto the bar as he turned following a free kick into the box.

Scott Stevenson put Wulfs ahead after 23 minutes; he made an excellent late run into the box to meet Thompson’s cross and had enough time to bring it under control and curl it past the ‘keeper with his left foot.

Wulfrunians had two great chances to double their lead just before the break. Craig Gregg saw his shot excellently tipped over by Calum Barret after getting in behind the defence, and then Thompson chipped Barret as he rushed out five minutes later- only to see it headed off the line.

Five minutes after the break, the hosts levelled. Dave Ablewhite picked the ball up on the edge of the Wulfs area and lofted the ball over substitute ‘keeper Jono Brown into the net.

However, just three minutes later, Wulfs regained the lead through Gregg. Some great play by Jake Sedgemore in midfield allowed him to find Thompson on the left, who fired a great cross in that allowed Gregg to poke home from close range.

It took until the 68th minute for Brocton to equalise, Carl Morris’ cross was headed across goal to Gary Fife- who nodded home from close range.

Immediately after, Brocton had the chance to go ahead after being awarded a penalty. Dave Asbury brought down Morris in the area, but Ablewhite saw his spot kick excellently pushed away by Brown. This was the last chance for either side, as neither of them had a clear chance to win the game in the closing stages.

AFC Wulfunians line up: Tipton (Brown 45), Perks, Talbot, Sedgemore, Hill, Asbury, Webb (Gregg 33), Lait, Thompson (Howells 72), Stevenson, Robertson.
