AFCW 2 Quorn 0

Nine-man AFC Wulfrunians produced a terrific performance to beat much fancied Quorn 2-0 at the Castlecroft Stadium. Goals from Jake Sedgemore and Craig Gregg put Wulfs in charge after John Hill had been dismissed early on, before Sedgemore followed him to the dressing room midway through the second half.

After a bright opening, Wulfs were reduced to 10 men when centre half Hill brought down Quorn striker Liam Read as he bore down on goal.

The numerical disadvantage didn’t matter though as the home side took the lead when Gregg was adjudged to have been hauled down at a corner and Sedgemore duly despatched the resulting penalty.

Wulfs continued to defend well up to the interval and Quorn’s only real effort at goal was the resulting free kick that struck the wall and rebounded to Karl Whymark but his driven effort was well saved by Jono Brown.

Debutant Chris Lait had a great chance to double Wulfs’ lead early in the second half when he fired over from a good position but a second goal did arrive in the 54th minute. Jake Webb showed great skill on the right, drifting past three defenders before squaring for Gregg to cut inside his marker and fire into the top corner.

Quorn’s first real effort at goal came just after the hour mark when Jordan Wakeling headed a near post corner towards goal but Jordan Perks was perfectly positioned to head off the line.

Things got more difficult for a Wulfs when Sedgemore was dismissed in the 73rd minute following a second bookable offence.

The nine men held out admirably until two minutes from time when Quorn were awarded a penalty after Liam Turner had been brought down but Jamie Clarke’s spot kick was driven against the underside of the crossbar and Wulfs held on until the final whistle to secure a fantastic three points.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Brown, Perks, Talbot, Sedgemore, Hill, Asbury, Webb (Robertson 74), Lait, Gregg (Thompson 77), Stevenson (King 84), Howells.
