AFCW 1 Shepshed Dynamo 0

AFC Wulfrunians started the 2014/15 Midland Football League Premier Division campaign with a victory at home against Shepshed Dynamo- courtesy of a late own goal by visiting defender James Brooks.

Wulfs started off the better side, having a string of chances within the first 20 minutes. Jake Webb skipped past two Dynamo defenders before firing his shot wide and Craig Gregg hit the side netting after Jordan Perks put him in behind the defence.

It was the visitors, however, who had the best chance of the first half. Callum Thompson capitalised on a slip in the Wulfs’ defence to go one-on-one but Danny Tipton pulled off an excellent save with his feet to deny the striker.

Tipton was on hand to prevent Dynamo again six minutes before the break. An over-hit cross fell to Steve Chaplin, but Tipton again saved with his feet.

A pair of corners caused Wulfrunians trouble early in the second half. Danny Chapman struck the post with a header first and just a minute later Rob McCormick saw his effort hooked off the line by Tipton.

Shepshed could have considered themselves unfortunate to not take the lead in the second half as they had a prolonged period of pressure. Chaplin’s fantastic ball across the face of goal was begging to be poked home from close range but it evaded everybody.

In similar circumstances a few minutes later, Chaplin got on the end of a ball across the face of goal by Thompson but somehow managed to push it wide from just a yard out.

Wulfrunians took the lead with just two minutes remaining in very strange style. Webb attempted a hopeful ball into the box from a deep position and as Brooks acrobatically attempted to block it, he back heeled it over Ryan Thacker in goal and in off the crossbar.

This result sees Wulfs start off the season in the best way possible and they will now hope to carry the momentum on into their next game, as they host Stourport Swifts on Tuesday night.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Jones, Burd (Howells 42), Sedgemore, Hill, Asbury, Perks (King 76), Rose-Laing, Gregg, Stevenson (Thompson 76), Webb.
