Highgate United 3 AFCW 3

AFC Wulfrunians had to settle for a point from their penultimate game of the season after a thrilling contest against Highgate United. Despite conceding three goals from set-pieces, Wulfs struck three of their own through Brad Lawley, Liam Haycock and Andy Thompson.

The hosts took an early lead with the first chance of the game. Danny Rolfe’s corner was powerfully met by Liam Daly and, despite the best efforts of Danny Tipton to keep it out, it floated into the net.

It took Wulfs 17 minutes to have their first clear chance, and this also resulted in a goal. Haycock dribbled on the left and saw his cross deflected to the edge of the area, where Lawley was waiting to fire it past Chris Jay.

Nine minutes later, the visitors went ahead. Jacob Craner showed great vision to play in Thompson on the left; he pulled it back for Haycock who turned it in through Jay’s legs.

Thompson could have extended Wulfs’ lead when Craner again did well to play him through. This time he went one-on-one, but his effort was well saved by the ‘keeper.

United had a huge chance of their own seven minutes before the break. Leading-scorer Lei Brown saw his header from a corner cleared off the line by Jake Sedgemore.

Highgate finally levelled after 42 minutes; Joe Adams’ free-kick was headed past Tipton by the unmarked Nathan Edgington after he’d made an excellent run across the Wulfs defence.

Thompson produced a spectacular goal to put Wulfrunians back in front seven minutes after the interval. He picked the ball up at the halfway line, dribbled all the way to the edge of the area before unleashing a powerful effort, with his weaker foot, that rocketed into the top corner.

The home side levelled with eight minutes to go, again from a corner. Brown headed the delivery towards goal and it was turned in from close range by Luke Fuller.

Highgate had snatched one point, but it could have very easily been all three. In the 91st minute, Brown met a Karl King cross with a diving header that was brilliantly kept out by the feet of Tipton, meaning the points were shared.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Sedgemore, Burd, Rose-Laing, Asbury, Brindley, Craner, Lawley (Robertson 83) , Thompson (Hurren 83), Haycock, Perks (Gregg 8).
