Heather St John’s 1 AFCW 1

AFC Wulfrunians were forced to settle for a point from their first ever visit to Heather St John’s, but could have come away with more, even though they were reduced to 10 men in the final 12 minutes.

Jacob Craner had put Wulfs in front, with Richard Lonsdale replying for the hosts before Dave Asbury was sent off.

There was only one first half chance for each side, with Wulfs’ resulting in their goal. Jake Webb beat Josh McPherson to the ball and sprinted clear on the left before cutting the ball back to Craner who fired into the bottom corner.

Heather’s only chance came on the stroke of half time, Jake Healy held off Rich Golding but his shot on the turn rolled wide of Danny Tipton’s goal.

Craner could have doubled his tally three minutes into the second half, he cut inside from the right but his powerful effort was well held by George Woodward.

Wulfrunians were undone by a long ball behind the defence for Heather’s goal. Hayden Johns launched a long ball up-field that Lonsdale chased down and then sent it into the corner with a fantastic volley across his body.

Asbury was then dismissed after 78 minutes in questionable circumstances. He tussled with Lonsdale as he broke clear, but it seemed as if both players were fairly challenging for the ball, and when both players went down it was Asbury who was adjudged to have made a foul. As Lonsdale was bearing down on goal, the referee had to send the defender off for denying the goal scoring opportunity.

The visitors did not allow this to keep them down, however, as some quick thinking by Andy Thompson almost put them back in front. He took a long throw in very quickly to put Craig Gregg through on goal, but he dragged his shot wide of the mark.

Lonsdale was again involved as Heather should have added a late goal, he outpaced two defenders before crossing to Dean Withers who fired over even though he was unmarked.

There was a final chance for a Wulfs winner in the dying seconds, but Golding’s header from Ash Burd’s free kick struck the bar before bouncing clear.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Sedgemore, Burd, Palmer, Golding, Asbury, Craner (Hurren 79), Lawley, Gregg, Stevenson (Thompson 74), Webb
