Dunkirk 2 AFCW 2

AFC Wulfrunians recovered from a two-goal half time deficit to gain a draw and finish their season on a positive note. They fell behind to goals from Macauley Diuk and Kevin Lusamba, before Craig Gregg and Scott Stevenson both struck to give Wulfs a well-deserved point.

The hosts took the lead after just six minutes; Diuk took advantage of some hesitation in Wulfs’ back four, as the ball bounced around in the area, and fired it into the net.

Lusamba doubled his side’s lead after 27 minutes. Jack Upton’s impressive cross from the left was met powerfully by Lusamba – leaving the ‘keeper with no chance.

Wulfs came out firing in the second half and pulled a goal back almost immediately. Substitute Andy Thompson flicked a long ball on to Gregg, who chested it before hooking it over his shoulder and over the head of Jake Want.

Thompson and Brad Lawley both had chances to level for Wulfs in quick succession. Lawley fired wide from the edge of the area after a knockdown and Thompson saw his shot pushed wide following an excellent ball from Rich Palmer.

Coutts missed the chance to quell any chance of a Wulfrunians comeback when his side were awarded a penalty. Diuk was brought down in the area by Dave Asbury, but Danny Tipton pulled off an excellent save with his feet to keep Wulfs in the game.

The visitors finally levelled with seven minutes to go after a sustained period of pressure. Liam Haycock took the ball to the byline before crossing to the unmarked Stevenson, who fired in to the empty net from close range.

Wulfs had one final chance to win the game in the last minute. Thompson’s long throw was met by Lawley, but his header cannoned off the post and rolled away.

This sees the end of AFC Wulfrunians’ first season in the Midland Football Alliance in a highly respectable eighth place and gives them a solid foundation to build on next season.

AFC Wulfurnians line up: Tipton, Sedgemore, Burd, Palmer, Asbury, Lawley, Craner (Haycock 64), Rose-Laing (Hurren 45), Gregg, Stevenson, Robertson (Thompson 45).
