Coventry Sphinx 1 AFCW 3

An excellent hat trick from Brad Lawley ensured AFC Wulfrunians came away with all three points from a gritty encounter away at Coventry Sphinx. He fired two in the first half, before rounding off the win with a third shortly after Matty Fowler had pulled one back for the hosts.

The visitors started the game the better side and Lawley put them ahead after just eight minutes. He played an outstanding ball through to Craig Gregg- only for Carl O’Neil to rush out and clear it- but it fell back to him and he took advantage of the ‘keeper being out of position by lobbing him.

Gregg could have doubled Wulfs’ lead 27 minutes in, but the ‘keeper blocked his shot well after Mike Robertson had put him through.

Some quick thinking by Scott Stevenson did eventually lead to Wulfs’ lead being doubled. He caught the defence off-guard with a quick free kick and Lawley fired it low, past O’Neil.

There was an unexpected stoppage on 36 minutes when the floodlights went out for a short period of time meaning the players had to vacate the pitch. However, they were back on after 10 minutes and play was able to be resumed.

The hosts had their first real chance of the game 11 minutes into the second half, Fowler put in a great cross but Ashley Wilks saw his shot blocked by the outstanding James Skedgel.

Sphinx put themselves in with a shout after 62 minutes as they pulled a goal back. Ashley Cain crossed from deep for Fowler to climb above the defenders and head it into the top corner.

Thirteen minutes later, Lawley completed his hat-trick and Wulfs completed their victory. An excellent corner from Stevenson left Lawley in the perfect position to poke the ball home at the back post.

This win sees Wulfrunians remain in a solid 11th position in the league and means they are now unbeaten in their last eight games.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Skedgel, Burd, Palmer, Golding, Asbury, Craner (Cooper 91), Lawley, Gregg, Stevenson, Robertson (Marsh 85).
