AFCW 2 Alvechurch 1

A game that lasted much longer than expected was fittingly decided in the final minutes through a Jake Sedgemore penalty. The last-gasp strike followed Jack Cresswell netting for Alvechurch after Mike Robertson had put AFC Wulfrunians in front.

The game was delayed for 30 minutes after one of the referee’s assistants got injured in the first half and had to be replaced before the second half could begin.

Wulfrunians started the better of the two sides and could have gone ahead after 7 minutes through Andy Thompson. He rose to meet and excellent delivery by Robertson but his header flew over the bar.

The visitors had a pair of early chances themselves, with both Cresswell and Ashley Watson firing over with chances from the edge of the area.

Robertson gave Wulfs the lead 10 minutes before the interval. Thompson latched onto Craig Gregg’s cross but saw his effort saved from close range; Thompson, however, had the presence of mind to lay the ball back to Robertson who placed into the corner with a first-time effort.

Thompson could have added to the lead just one minute later. Jacob Craner won the ball back straight after the kick-off and threaded him through, however Keith Rostill managed to push the shot away.

A moment of brilliance from Cresswell got the visitors level after 57 minutes. He stepped up to take a free kick which curled over the wall before dipping enough to get under the body of Danny Tipton and into the bottom corner.

Wulfs were awarded a penalty with one minute left when Craner was kicked in the head inside the area. Even though a free kick was originally given, the referee eventually changed his decision after much discussion. Sedgemore remained cool under the pressure and rolled the ball past Rostill- sending him the wrong way.

Craner could have added to Wulfs’ joy, but his shot after cutting in from the left was tipped away for a corner.

This great result in Wulfs’ penultimate home game of the season allows them to take confidence into their final game at Castlecroft Stadium this year, as they host Gornal Athletic on Easter Monday.
