Stourport Swifts 2 AFCW 2

A second half revival from Stourport Swifts saw AFC Wulfrunians let a two goal lead slip as they were held to a draw. Goals from Mike Robertson and Andy Thompson had given them the lead but goals from Lewis Pountney and Jamie Willets earned Stourport a point.

Swifts had the better of the opening exchanges and would have been ahead had Nathan Jackson not blocked Pountney’s shot from close range with an excellent tackle.

It was Wulfrunians, however, who took the lead after 22 minutes. Thompson played a quick pass back to Robertson, who opened up his body and curled the ball over Sam Hawker with an excellent strike from 25 yards.

Brad Lawley missed a great opportunity to double Wulfs’ lead eight minutes before the break. Thompson’s shot was deflected and fell to Lawley six yards out but his header flew well wide of the mark.

Some fantastic play from Ash Burd provided Wulfs with their second after 49 minutes. He beat three players before pulling the ball back to Lawley, who then laid off Thompson so he could fire it past the ‘keeper.

This set a change of attitude into Wulfrunians as they sat a lot deeper as Stourport piled heavy pressure upon them. This pressure would have resulted in a flurry of Swifts goals had it not been for some fine goalkeeping by Danny Tipton.

First, he flew across his goal to tip Jamie Hyde’s effort round the post before showing great reactions to keep out Pountney’s header from a Calvin Dinsley free kick.

Pountney added the first goal of Stourport’s comeback with 22 minutes remaining. Michael Briscoe headed a deep corner back into the six-yard-box and the striker turned it in from close range.

It was from another corner that the hosts grabbed their late equaliser. Willets was left unmarked on the edge of the box and he powered into the box to meet the corner with a powerful header into the top corner.

This was a fourth game without defeat for Wulfrunians and they now look to continue this run when they host Loughborough University this Saturday.
