Continental Star 2 AFCW 4

AFC Wulfrunians ended a streak of four games without a win with an emphatic victory at Continental Star. The game was wrapped up by half time as Wulfs added all of their goals before the interval, with both of Continental’s goals coming in the second half.

Wulfs were extremely quick out of the blocks and went ahead after just three minutes. Craig Gregg’s cross was fisted away by Jordan Ellis before Gavin Hurren fired past Ellis on the turn.

Hurren and Gregg linked up again just two minutes later as the lead was doubled. Hurren turned provider this time as Gregg latched on to his through ball and curled it past the ‘keeper.

Brad Lawley added a third for the visitors out of nowhere. The ball was bouncing in front of him from a throw in and he guided it perfectly over Ellis’ head with a dipping volley.

Wulfs completed their scoring for the game 11 minutes before the break, Jake Sedgemore’s throw was headed out by a defender but Scott Stevenson met it on the edge of the area with a terrific volley that left Ellis with no chance as it flew into the bottom corner.

A goal four minutes after the restart gave Continental a slim hope that they could pull of a miraculous comeback. Allando Davis’ effort was well saved by Danny Tipton but he then managed to cross to Tony Okome who made no mistake in sliding it in.

A header off the line by Dave Asbury ensured that there was no comeback scare for Wulfrunians. Okome flicked the ball at goal after a scramble but Asbury’s header prevented him from pulling a goal back.

A Wisdom Machangani volley required the best save of the game from Tipton to deny him. He dived low to his left and instinctively stuck out his hand to keep it out. Tipton’s efforts were in vain, however, as from the ensuing corner Lyndon Weller rose to head in off the underside of the bar.

Stevenson then went close to restoring the visitors’ three goal cushion when he lifted a shot over the keeper only to see the ball rebound back off the post.

In the end it was a much deserved victory for Wulfrunians after a thorough and free-flowing performance.
