AFCW 2 Loughborough Uni 1

AFC Wulfrunians overcame a battling Loughborough University side as they put in a free-flowing attacking performance. Scott Stevenson put the hosts ahead with Rich Golding then adding his first for the club, before turning one in at the wrong end late on.

Wulfs started much the better side and had their best early chance after 13 minutes. Andy Thompson held off a defender before laying the ball to Jake Webb but his powerful shot struck the post.

Thompson had two excellent chances of his own to put his side in front. First, he shot wide from a tight angle after Rich Palmer put him through on goal and then he blazed over as he ran clear.

‘Keeper Danny Tipton prevented Wulfs from going behind with a string of fantastic saves. He twice denied Jack Emmet, as he cut inside from the left both times, by tipping his efforts round the post.

Wulfs went ahead 12 minutes after half time, a poor kick from Loughborough ‘keeper Brendan Hazlett was intercepted by Palmer. He squared it to Stevenson, who took one touch before firing it low into the bottom corner.

Palmer almost got a second assist just a minute later; he won the ball back from the restart and threaded in Thompson, but his shot was saved by Hazlett with his feet.

Golding doubled Wulfrunians’ lead after 61 minutes, Stevenson’s corner landed at the feet of Golding three yards out and he made no mistake in turning it in.

Thompson almost added a third for his side after 67 minutes. He showed excellent strength to beat two defenders but his shot was weak and too close to the ‘keeper.

Loughborough received a consolation goal in additional time in controversial circumstances. Golding attempted to head the ball back to Tipton amid a scramble in the box and the linesman adjudged the header to have gone over the line, with Wulfs players adamant that he had managed to keep it out.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Sedgemore, Burd, Palmer (Hurren 72), Golding, Skedgel, Perks (Craner 72), Lawley, Thompson (Gregg 77), Stevenson, Webb
