AFCW 1 Walsall Wood 4

An excellent hat trick from Harry Harris was the difference as AFC Wulfrunians fell to a solid Walsall Wood side. Joey Butlin added Wood’s other goal with Jake Webb netting late on in reply, but the game was marred by injuries to Wulfs pair Nathan Rose-Laing and Andy Thompson.

Wulfrunians started the game brightly but fell behind after just six minutes. Butlin broke clear on the right and squared the ball into the feet of Harris, who rolled it past the outstretched hand of Danny Tipton.

The returning Craig Gregg had the best chance to level the game for the hosts- Scott Stevenson threaded him through but his effort was easily dealt with by the ‘keeper.

Gregg was again involved as Michael Robertson had another chance to equalise. He was in a great position to finish Gregg’s cross but his simple effort was miss-hit and easily collected by Matt Gaton.

Tipton pulled off a magnificent save to keep his side in the game six minutes before half time as he denied Jamie Hawkins, who had cut in from the left only to see his effort pushed wide.

An excellent acrobatic save from Gaton prevented Wulfs from levelling in first half stoppage time as kept out Brad Lawley’s flick from Robertson’s shot.

The visitors extended their lead just five minutes into the second half as Harris surprised everyone by hooking a bouncing ball over his own head and into the corner of the Wulfs net.

Butlin added another for Wood six minutes later as he curled a free kick over the wall and past Tipton.

Gregg had two excellent chances in quick succession to bring his side back into the game. First he volleyed against the post after Robertson had put him one-on-one and then he attempted to lob the ‘keeper but the effort fell just wide.

Wulfs added a consolation goal in the 90th minute as Gregg got to the by-line before crossing to Jake Webb who turned it in from close range.

Harris completed his hat trick with almost the final kick of the game as he finished off a counter attack by poking the ball past Tipton from close range.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Sedgemore, Howells, Rose-Laing (Webb 7), Golding, Hurren, A Jackson, Lawley, Thompson (Gregg 39), Stevenson, Robertson (Haycock 70).
