AFCW 1 Quorn 1

AFC Wulfrunians were unfortunate to come away with just a point from an enthralling encounter with second-placed Quorn. In a game that involved many stoppages, Liam Turner put the visitors in front before a Jake Sedgemore penalty levelled for Wulfs.

Wulfrunians started the game brightly and should have been ahead after 10 minutes. Jake Webb crossed from the left but Gavin Hurren’s close range effort was excellently tipped over the bar.

From the ensuing corner, Rich Golding climbed to power a header at goal but the effort rattled the crossbar.

For all of Wulfs’ pressure, it was Quorn who took the lead after 29 minutes. After a quick break, Sam Young delivered from the by-line and Turner forced it in from close range as he was left unmarked.

Dave Asbury had the chance to equalise for the hosts five minutes before the break when he met Scott Stevenson’s low corner with a shot that was blocked on the line before being scrambled away.

Wulfrunians came out for the second half firing and were awarded a penalty after 49 minutes. Hurren was brought down by James Dodd, who received a booking, as he powered into the box. Sedgemore made no mistake as he sent the ‘keeper the wrong way as he converted from the spot.

From this point onwards, the game was extremely open yet neither side carved out a chance of particular note until added time when Jordan Perks fired over from Stevenson’s cross.

This battling point helps Wulfrunians to build on the solid foundations that have been set in a first season in the Midland Football Alliance. This good performance is just one of many against the more established sides in the division and they now move on to a match against Stourport Swifts on Tuesday.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Sedgemore, Burd, Lawley (Skedgel 86), Golding, Asbury, Perks, Hurren (N Jackson 79), Gregg (Thompson 68), Stevenson, Webb.
