AFCW 1 Coventry Sphinx 3

AFC Wulfrunians can count themselves unlucky not to come away with at least a point as they fell to a well-organised Coventry Sphinx side. Luke Williams netted a brace for the visitors and their other goal came through an excellent Ashley Cain strike. Scott Stevenson added a goal in reply for Wulfs.

Stevenson had the best of the early chances for the hosts; his curling free kick was saved well down low by Carl O’Neil.

Sphinx scored with their first chance of the game, Cain’s free kick deflected off many bodies but Williams claimed to have got the final touch as the ball crept over the line.

Within minutes, Andy Thompson had the chance to level for Wulfrunians. Jordan Perks played a fantastic ball to him over the top but his chipped effort fell just wide of the post.

It was then Thompson who instigated Wulfs levelling the score; he latched on to a through ball from Jake Webb and beat two players before providing a cross for Stevenson to fire home.

Cain put Sphinx back in front after 26 minutes with a wonderful strike. He cut inside from the right and his curling left-footed effort crept just under the crossbar- leaving Danny Tipton with no chance.

Thompson had another chance to bring Wulfs back level five minutes into the second half: he had to backtrack to meet Mike Robertson’s cross but his powerful header smashed off the post.

Tipton prevented the visitors from extending their lead when he made an excellent save with his feet. Williams did well to get a volley off from a tight angle but the ‘keeper stopped it well with his feet.

Substitute Ashley Jackson provided Wulfs with another chance to equalise but his header from an excellent Webb cross flew past the post.

Williams ended any hopes of a Wulfrunians comeback in the 84th minute as he capped off an impressive counter attack. Wulfs had thrown most of their players forward for a corner but when the move broke down, Giovanni Dainty broke quickly and then threaded in Williams to provide the finish.

Webb was denied a late consolation goal when his powerful effort was blocked in the line before being collected by O’Neil.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Perks, Burd, Palmer (Rose-Laing 58), Skedgel, Asbury, Webb, Howells (Lawley 66), Thompson, Stevenson, Robertson (A Jackson 66).
