AFCW 5 Kirby Muxloe 2

A sublime performance by AFC Wulfrunians- including a brace from captain Jake Sedgemore- saw them record a 5-2 victory over Kirby Muxloe. The impressive performance was marred, however, by the sending off of Dave Asbury for a second bookable offence after 62 minutes.

Sedgemore got Wulfs off to a flying start, his free-kick from 20 yards curled beautifully out of Elliot Shilliam’s reach and into the top corner.

He continued to be significant in the hosts’ play as he denied Brett Darby with a fine last-ditch tackle before providing Asbury with a magnificent chance to double his side’s lead.

Wulfrunians were awarded a penalty after 35 minutes when Andy Thompson’s effort at goal struck the hand of an unfortunate defender, who did not have enough time to move away from the effort, and Sedgemore stepped up to roll in his second of the game.

Scott Stevenson added a third just three minutes later, Sedgemore’s free kick was flicked on by James Skedgel and fell to Stevenson, who rounded the ‘keeper before slotting home.

Nathan Rose-Laing added another for Wulfs a minute before the break. Stevenson flicked the ball over the heads of two defenders and Rose-Laing snuck in with a header to beat Shilliam to the ball and poke it in.

Thompson had the chance to add to the lead just six minutes into the second half. He latched on to a poor back pass but saw his shot excellently saved by the feet of Shilliam.

The visitors were given a penalty after 62 minutes, in an incident not dissimilar from the one in the first half. Darby’s strike towards goal hit the hand of Dave Asbury as he tried to block it, leading to him being dismissed as he’d already been booked. Ryan Seal capitalised on the opportunity and pulled a goal back.

Substitute Ashley Jackson quelled any hopes of a Kirby comeback when he added the fifth and final goal for Wulfs. Some impressive skill from Thompson gave him the opportunity to cross from the left and Jackson was in the perfect position to head it into an empty net.

Danny Eden added a late consolation for Kirby when Darby’s cross looped over Danny Tipton, leaving Eden free to poke it in from close range but Wulfrunians had already secured the win.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Sedgemore, Burd, Palmer, Skedgel, Asbury, Perks (A Jackson 59), Rose-Laing, Thompson (Haycock 77), Stevenson, Howells (Golding 64)
