AFCW 4 Dunkirk 1

An impressive brace from Jake Webb was a decisive factor as AFC Wulfrunians romped to a 4-1 victory at home to Dunkirk.

Phil Granville had at one point given the visitors a way back into the match, but goals from Andy Thompson and Scott Stevenson secured the win for Wulfs.

It was the hosts who started the game better and had the best of the early opportunities. The most significant of these came when James Skedgel saw his bicycle kick tipped round the post by Jake Want.

It wasn’t until the 22nd minute, however, that Wulfs took the lead. A series of corners was finally ended when Webb rose to flick Stevenson’s near-post corner past Want.

Webb could have added another just nine minutes later; after he cut inside from the left he saw his curling effort pushed away for yet another corner.

Dunkirk flew out of the blocks in the second half, levelling the scores just one minute after the interval.

Granville saw his first effort saved by Danny Tipton’s feet. However, Granville got the better of Tipton at the second attempt, with his lob dipping in under the crossbar.

Dunkirk’s ‘keeper almost gave them the lead just two minutes later with what was almost an extremely unfortunate strike. He booted the ball from his own goal, and it almost bounced straight over Tipton’s head.

Tipton managed to avoid the situation as he tipped the ball wide of the post.

Wulfs were back in the lead through Webb on 54 minutes; he stole the ball from a defender before rounding Want and firing in.

Stevenson had a fantastic effort to further Wulfs lead with an effort from the edge of the area but his powerful shot cannoned back off of the post.

He turned provider two minutes later when he delivered a wonderful cross from the right to allow Thompson to turn it into the back of the net at the near post.

It was the combination of Stevenson and Thompson which led to the final Wulfs goal. They played an excellent one-two, allowing Stevenson to get round the ‘keeper and tap the ball into the empty net.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Sedgemore, Griffin, Palmer (Howells 80), Asbury, Skedgel, Perks, Lawley (Rose-Laing 76), Thompson, Stevenson, Webb (Robertson 80)
