Alvechurch 1 AFCW 3

AFC Wulfrunians showed fantastic fighting spirit as they battled back from a goal down to defeat Alvechurch 3-1. Wulfs’ goals came through Michael Robertson, Dave Asbury and Scott Stevenson after Luke Shearer had earlier given the hosts the lead.

Shearer’s strike came after 15 minutes and was the result of some impressive play by Rico Taylor; who eventually threaded through a fantastic pass which Shearer made no mistake in finishing.

Andy Thompson had Wulfrunians’ only two opportunities of the half; first he shot just wide on the turn, before heading over from early substitute Jake Webb’s excellent cross.

Shearer had the opportunity to double his tally three minutes into the second half, he ran clear but saw his effort well turned away by Danny Tipton’s feet.

Wulfs were extremely unfortunate not to go level after 62 minutes, Stevenson’s long range effort was pushed aside by Stuart Parson’s before Thompson was somehow denied by the flying ‘keeper.

Robertson finally levelled for Wulfs in the 63rd minute, Ash Burd’s corner resulted in a scramble in the box and as the ball came out to the winger, he rifled it into the roof of the net.

Wulfs then went ahead in the 70th minute, Dave Asbury rising above everyone else in the box to head home another corner from Burd.

Thompson almost made it the perfect ten minutes for the visitors when he ran clear, however his shot took a wicked deflection and just grazed the post.

Stevenson rounded off the scoring for Wulfrunians with 12 minutes to go; Thompson did well to beat two defenders before delivering a pinpoint cross for Stevenson to poke in.

A great run from Burd almost led to Wulfs adding a fourth; he laid the ball off to Brad Lawley, whose curling shot was just tipped round the post.

This win keeps Wulfrunians moving in the right direction as they look to progress up the table with their next challenge coming next Saturday when they host Rocester and their new manager, Dave Shaw.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Sedgemore, Burd, Palmer, Golding, Asbury, Perks (Webb 20), Howells (Rose-Laing 73), Thompson (Lawley 80), Stevenson, Robertson.
