AFCW 5 Rocester 1

A hat-trick from skipper Jake Sedgemore helped AFC Wulfrunians romp to victory in a game which they dominated right from the off. Andy Thompson and Scott Stevenson added Wulfs’ other goals, with Dan Brown adding a late consolation goal for the visitors.

Sedgemore ensured that his side started the afternoon well, as he struck his first in the 16th minute when his free-kick evaded everybody in a crowded penalty area, leaving Wayne Smith completely unsighted as it curled past him.

Wulfs added their second after 18 minutes; Ash Burd’s long ball from defence caused a mix-up in the Rocester defence and a poor back-pass fell straight to the feet of Thompson who made no mistake as he placed the ball past Smith.

Michael Robertson had the chance to add to Wulfs’ lead 10 minutes before the break, but his volley from Jake Webb’s cross skimmed the crossbar.

Stevenson added the third goal for Wulfrunians 12 minutes after the interval, he met Thompson’s cross with a powerful effort that sent the ‘keeper the wrong way.

Sedgemore’s second came after 65 minutes and it was again from a free-kick. This one was curled around the wall before getting a small deflection off a defender, one which was enough to send it past the ‘keeper.

Just two minutes later Sedgemore completed his hat-trick as well as completing Wulfs’ rout when he converted from the penalty spot. Thompson had shown good skill to get behind the Rocester defence but Carl Allen brought him down and allowed Sedgemore to roll the ball into the bottom corner.

It could have been even worse for Rocester had Smith not pulled off two excellent saves from close range. First he miraculously hooked Richard Golding’s poked effort away and then he pulled off a fantastic instinctive save to deny Nathan Rose-Laing.

Brown added a consolation goal late on with a brilliant chip over Danny Tipton’s head but it was too little, too late for the visitors.

Wulfrunians will look to continue their good form as they begin their busy Festive period with a visit to bottom-side Gornal Athletic on Boxing Day before hosting leaders Tividale just two days later.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Griffin, Burd, Sedgemore (Lawley 72), Golding, Asbury, Webb, Rose-Laing, Thompson (Haycock 84), Stevenson (Perks 72), Robertson.
