Stourport Swifts 1 AFCW 0 – League Cup

A second half strike from Josh Thompson condemned AFC Wulfrunians to defeat in this Polymac League Cup encounter. Thompson’s goal was one of very few chances in a game predominantly contested in midfield.

The only chance of the first half fell to Stourport’s John Griffin, he picked the ball up on the left hand side before cutting in and seeing his rising effort strike the bar before Danny Tipton collected the loose ball.

Thompson’s goal came just four minutes after the interval; he used his pace to get behind the defence, taking the ball round the ‘keeper before firing into the empty net.

The hosts’ lead could have been doubled just two minutes later if Calvin Dinsley’s shot following a corner wasn’t stopped on the line by one of his teammates.

Jamie Willets could have extended Swifts’ lead when he met Jordan Jones’ cross, his header from close range flew over the crossbar.

Andy Thompson had two chances in a matter of minutes to level the game for Wulfrunians. The first came after substitute Jack Marsh threaded him through but ‘keeper Lewis Solly did well to keep the sliding effort out; the other saw a great burst of pace from the striker, only for his shot to be turned away for a corner by Solly.

Substitute Tom Piggott was next to get in behind the Swifts defence but Solly was out smartly once again to deflect his shot wide for another corner.

Both Thompson and Griffin had chances to put the game beyond Wulfs in the last five minutes but Tipton was on hand to keep the visitors in with a shout right up to the final whistle. He saved well with his feet from Griffin before producing a diving save to prevent Thompson getting his second but Wulfs couldn’t take advantage by grabbing a late equaliser and fell to defeat.

AFC WULFRUNIANS LINE UP: Tipton, Sedgemore, Burd (Marsh 72), Howells, Griffin, Asbury, Perks, Stevenson, Gregg (Piggott 72), Thompson, Robertson (Cooper 85).
