AFCW 2 Alvechurch 2 – JW Hunt Cup

AFC Wulfrunians were unfortunate to fall to defeat on penalties after recovering from a two goal deficit in normal time. A fantastic second half effort to level the game was overshadowed by the eventual 3-2 defeat in the shootout.

It was the visitors who flew into an early lead; Reiss Brians’ cross was acrobatically volleyed past debutant Wulfrunians ‘keeper, Paul Evans, by Patryk Sikora.

They doubled their advantage after eight minutes; skipper Joe Wright excellently lobbed Evans from just outside of the area.

Youngster Danny Blackwell grabbed a goal back for Wulfs just five minutes later, Michael Robertson’s cross was weighted perfectly and Blackwell attacked it at pace before drilling his header past Stuart Parsons.

Liam Wilkinson had the hosts’ only other clear first half chance; Robertson pulled the ball back for him on the edge of the area but his effort was held easily by the ‘keeper.

Blackwell was again crucial as Wulfs pushed for an equaliser, his good cross from the right was met by Tom Piggott but Parsons did well to tip it away for a corner.

Wulfrunians’ heavy pressure finally paid off in the 89th minute, Richard Golding climbed above a crowd of players to flick on Ash Burd’s long throw- Piggott was waiting at the far post and he made no mistake as he smashed it past the ‘keeper to take the game to extra-time.

Wulfs carried their pressure into the extra-time period- first Piggott had a shot just wide before Blackwell’s shot from distance was palmed onto the post before bouncing clear.

Neither side, however, managed to grab a winner in this period so the result was decided by a penalty shootout.

Both sides converted their first two penalties, with Alvechurch then going on to score their third spot kick but missing their final two. These misses didn’t make a difference though, as Wulfs missed their remaining three penalties, bringing a loss that was possibly undeserved after an impressive fight back and large periods of dominance in both the second half and extra-time.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Evans, Perks (Burd 61), Marsh, Palmer (Howells 61), Golding, Griffin, Wilkinson, Rose-Laing (Brindley 73), Piggott, Blackwell, Robertson
