Loughborough Uni 2 AFCW 2

AFC Wulfrunians overturned a two-goal deficit to earn a point against the resilient ten-men of Loughborough University, their goals came through Craig Gregg and Thomas Piggott after Daniel Partridge had been sent off. A brace from Jack Poxon had previously given Loughborough the lead.

Poxon’s first goal came after just 12 minutes, Jack Emmett broke away on the left and his front post cross was turned in to the net by Poxon.

Partridge was given his marching orders on 18 minutes having collected two yellow cards. The first was for strong challenge on Jake Sedgemore, which left the Wulfs skipper unable to continue, before he was dismissed for fouling Gregg when he was on the break.

Five minutes later, however, Loughborough’s lead was doubled. Poxon was again the scorer after being picked out by a fantastic cross-field ball from Max Herbert and he produced an excellent shot into the far corner of Danny Tipton’s goal.

Wulfs’ best chance to get back in the game came in the 36th minute, Jake Webb played a perfectly-weighted pass to Dave Asbury- his effort from close range was straight at the ‘keeper.

Gregg pulled one back for Wulfs two minutes before the interval, Nathan Rose-Laing did well to thread him through before he slid the ball under Brendan Hazlett.

Poxon had the chance to complete his hat trick and seal the game for Loughborough, but Tipton was on hand to deny him. Following a scramble in Wulfs’ penalty area, Poxon smashed the ball across goal but it took an acrobatic save from Tipton to force it over the bar.

A wonderful passage of play almost led to a Wulfs equaliser, Ashley Burd linked up well with the midfield before he got onto the end of a Jake Webb cross, only to see his volley end up wide.

Wulfrunians finally equalised with 13 minutes remaining, Scott Stevenson took a quick free-kick to Michael Robertson on the left-hand side, his pinpoint cross was met by Piggott and his header flew into the corner.

Dave Asbury almost won the game late on with a header but he saw his effort fly wide and this meant that the sides finished all-square.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Perks, Burd, Palmer, Skedgel, Asbury, Webb, Rose-Laing (Piggott 72), Gregg, Sedgemore (Stevenson 8), Robertson
