Heath Hayes 3 AFC Wulfrunians 2

Two Dave Waple goals and a last-gasp strike from Ben Maddox gave Heath Hayes a win over a desperately unlucky Wulfrunians side. Wulfs’ goals came through Andy Thompson and Craig Gregg, Gregg’s strike had put them ahead with just 18 minutes remaining.

Jake Webb was Wulfs’ most influential attacking player and it was his effort after six minutes that represented their best chance of gaining an early lead. Thompson turned two defenders before threading Webb in, but his effort was acrobatically tipped away by Adam Jenkins.

It was Heath Hayes, however, who took an early lead, Dennis Pickett’s shot was mis-hit but luckily fell to the feet of Waple who made no mistake in slotting the ball past Danny Tipton.

Tipton’s only other action of the half came shortly after, Waple was again the man up against him but his powerful drive was forced away by Tipton’s feet.

Webb was involved again as Wulfs equalised, he showed great power and pace to get past his marker before drilling in a perfect cross to Thompson, who was on hand to turn it in at the front post.

The combination of Webb and Thompson came close to providing another goal on the stroke of half-time, it was Webb who again crossed for Thompson, this time from the left hand side, but his strike was matched by the ‘keeper who palmed it over the bar.

Gregg finally gave Wulfrunians the lead on 72 minutes, Jordan Perks picked him out from a swiftly-taken free-kick and with his back to goal, Gregg swivelled and fired the ball across Jenkins and into the bottom corner.

In the final minute of allotted time, Hayes found their equaliser. Adam Robinson’s ball into the box from a debatable free-kick caused some misunderstandings in the Wulfs defence. In the ensuing goalmouth scramble, Tipton unfortunately pushed the ball straight onto the head of Waple, who forced it home, as he attempted to make a save.

It was another Robinson delivery that led to Heath Hayes’ injury-time winner, his floated free-kick was met by Ben Maddox who headed in as he towered above the Wulfs defenders, leaving Tipton with no chance.

Wulfs now host Continental Star on Saturday in what will be only their second league match since August.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Perks, Burd, Palmer, Skedgel, Asbury, Webb, Rose-Laing, Gregg, Thompson (Sedgemore 73), Stevenson (Robertson 83).
