AFCW 5 Atherstone Town 0 – FA Vase

A brace from defender Dave Asbury and a hat trick of assists for Scott Stevenson helped AFC Wulfrunians on their way to a 5-0 drubbing of Atherstone Town. Wulfrunians’ other goals came through Jake Webb, Nathan Rose-Laing and Michael Robertson in a game where the visitors offered no threat going forward.

It took just six minutes for Wulfs to take the lead, some good link-up play between Stevenson and Webb presented the latter with a chance on goal and he beat one defender before firing into the bottom corner.

Atherstone’s only chance in the whole game came just three minutes later, Daniel Cleaney broke through on the left but he saw his attempted chip palmed wide.

Rose-Laing had the chance to double the lead after 25 minutes, Craig Gregg played the ball to him on the edge of the area but he dragged his shot wide. He made no mistake, however, 10 minutes later when he connected with Stevenson’s corner from close range to score Wulfs’ second.

Rose-Laing had the chance to add a third just four minutes before half time, he rose to meet Webb’s cross but could only find the side netting.

Stevenson created yet another chance just one minute into the second half, his quick free-kick was aimed in the direction of Robertson at the front post but his flick was excellently tipped over by Phil Smith.

Asbury added his first of the game shortly after, Gregg’s mis-hit shot landed at his feet and he smashed it past the ‘keeper and into the roof of the net.

He added his second with 19 minutes remaining; Stevenson was again on hand to provide the assist as Asbury volleyed his near post corner into the back of the net.

Robertson completed the rout for Wulfs after 75 minutes; he intercepted a poor pass across the Atherstone defence before taking the ball round Smith and sliding it into an empty net.

Wulfs had two chances to add further goals late on, first Jake Sedgemore beat two defenders before playing in Webb who saw his shot saved, Webb then turned provider as he put in a fantastic cross for Robertson but his close range effort was straight at the ‘keeper.

AFC Wulfrunians line up: Tipton, Perks (Sedgemore 67), Burd, Palmer (Lawley 67), Asbury, Skedgel, Webb, Rose-Laing, Gregg (Piggott 76), Stevenson, Robertson
