Shifnal Town 1 AFCW 2

A 67th minute Jake Sedgemore penalty secured all three points for AFC Wulfrunians after a hard fought 2-1 win away at Shifnal Town.

The home side had the first chances of the game with Callum Pugh firing a shot straight at keeper Danny Tipton from the edge of the area and Charlie Knowles doing the same from a free kick.

Wulfs’ first chance came in the 10th minute when Andy Thompson headed a Dave Howells first time cross well wide of the target.

Two minutes later Wulfs broke the deadlock. Jordan Perks released Thompson on the right and he cut the ball back for Tom Piggott to fire home through a crowded goalmouth from 12 yards out.

Mike Robertson then fired a 25 yard shot well wide before Shifnal keeper Graeme Hampton twice denied Thompson after Perks had put him in the clear.

Thompson then had a third clear sight of goal when Sedgemore put him clear but this time he dragged his shot across goal and wide of the far post.

Tom Ray was next to go close for Wulfs when he saw his fierce shot deflected over the crossbar after Piggott had cut the ball back into his path.

Wulfs were made to rue these missed chances as Shifnal hit back towards the end of the half. Shortly after Louis Jones headed a deep corner wide at the far post they grabbed an equaliser two minutes before the interval. Ryan Heston worked his way through a couple of challenges and the ball broke to Pugh who drew out the keeper before squaring for Steve Morris to tap home at the far post.

Dan Beddows had the first sight of goal at the start of the second half but his low shot was too close to Wulfs keeper Danny Tipton.

Shifnal keeper Hampton was then back in action when he saved well with his foot after Piggott had put Howells through.

Piggott then went close himself when his shot was saved by Hampton and his follow up effort flew just over the bar.

Shortly after, a Justin Worthington slip allowed Thompson another clear run at goal but again his effort was well saved by keeper Hampton.

A crucial moment of the game came just after the hour mark when Shifnal’s Charlie Knight was dismissed for an off the ball incident.

Wulfs compounded their misery as they regained their lead in the 67th minute. Thompson run in to the area was halted by a good challenge by Worthington but the big striker got back to his feet and turned well before getting tripped. Jake Sedgemore made no mistake with the resulting spot kick.

Two minutes later Wulfs wasted a great chance to extend their lead when Thompson played a low ball across goal to Piggott but his miss-hit shot hit the crossbar.

The ten men of Shifnal showed great spirit and had a good opportunity after neat interplay between Steve Morris and Glyn Coney set up a good chance for Jaton Vernon but his shot flew way over the bar.

Their final chance to get back in to the game came with virtually the final kick of the game when they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area but Vernon’s shot struck the wall and Wulfs held on for the win.
