U18’s pegged back by Wood

AFC Wulfrunians and Walsall Wood fought out an entertaining 4-4 draw, a performance that owed more to tired players rather than high quality attacking football.

Wulfs got off to a bright enough start taking a 13th minute lead when Ryan Bright delivered a deep cross from the right and although keeper Ash Roden got his fingertips to the ball, it dropped on to the head of Mike Brookes who nodded in from close range.

Three minutes later Harvey Pearson doubled the lead when he fired home after Rob Whatton had seen his header from a Jake Webb corner blocked on the line.

Wood showed their first bit of attacking threat shortly after when Liam Matthews played a great defence splitting ball through to Isaac Cooper and he squared just inches ahead of the onrushing Sean Henderson.

Brookes had a chance to extend the lead but he dragged his shot wide after being put clear by Webb while at the other end Henderson shot straight at keeper Jake James.

After going close a couple of times Henderson finally pulled a goal back when he led a counter attack and exchanged passes with Matty Steer before firing past keeper James.

Play was sweeping from end to end with James making a good save from Cooper and Roden doing likewise from Brookes at the other end.

The second half started badly for Wulfs as Wood drew level in the 50th minute. Steer ran on to a ball over the top and stabbed a shot past the advancing James and into the net.

Parity lasted just two minutes as Wulfs regained their lead when Bright went past his man before squaring for Webb to sweep home at the near post.

It appeared to be game over when Bright made it 4-2 on 66 minutes after Charlie Turner has twice failed to force the ball home from close range.

Wood had other ideas and pulled a goal back ten minutes later when Cooper’s ball in to the area found Alex Rose completely unmarked and he swivelled before firing home.

Matthews then saw his downward header cleared off the line and Cooper shot wide from a narrow angle as Wood pushed for an equaliser.

They were rewarded two minutes from time when Rose ran clear of the defence but trod on the ball. Fortunately for him Henderson was in support to drive low into the bottom corner of the net and earn his team a point.
