Wulfs held by Sporting

Wulfs were twice pegged back and had to settle for a point at home to local rivals Wolverhampton Sporting Community.

It was the visitors who made the brighter start and almost took a 5th minute lead when James Quarry pounced on a defensive error and rolled the ball past the keeper but agonisingly wide of the far post.

It was Wulfs who opened the scoring on the quarter hour mark with their first real effort at goal. Tony Collins played a good ball down the right to Ricky Anslow and his deep cross was headed back inside by Danny Crudgington for Grant Joshua to hook home at the near post.

Sporting heads refused to drop and they went close when Natty Lawson’s corner was headed goalwards by Leon Miles and Ben Wilkins swivelled and fired way over from close range.

They had an even better chance shortly after when a quick breakout saw Quarry freed on the right and his low cross into the middle was side-footed over by Stefan Bernard at close range.

The pressure told as Sporting equalised five minutes before the interval when Marlon Taylor nipped in to intercept an attempted back header and rounded the keeper before walking the ball into the empty net.

Wulfs went close to regaining their lead at the start of the second half when Chris Rabone played a dangerous ball into the area where Crudgington’s goal-bound shot was blocked on the line.

After a good spell of pressure Wulfs did regain their lead in the 57th minute. Rabone pounced on a loose ball and delivered low ball to the near post where Anslow prodded through the keeper’s legs.

Wulfs needed a third goal and almost got it when Crudgington sent a dangerous cross into the area and substitute Tom Ray stooped to head over from close range.

Sporting made them pay for this miss as they grabbed a second equaliser seven minutes from time when Ashley Dicken latched on to a long free kick over the top and lobbed the ball over the stranded keeper.

Wulfs went all out for a late winner with Tom Piggott spurning two half chances and Jake Sedgemore seeing his free kick well saved by keeper Andy Barfoot.
