Crudgington settles local derby

A superb hat-trick from Danny Crudgington ensured Wulfs bounced back to winning ways with a terrific 4-1 win at home to local rivals Wednesfield.

Wulfs almost got off to the perfect start when Crudgington was handed possession straight from the kick off and carried forward before sending in a pin-point cross to Nathan Rose-Laing but he screwed his shot wide.

The visitors then enjoyed a good spell of pressure and had a good opportunity to take the lead when Jordan Perks lifted a ball over the top and Scott Moore burst through but shot tamely straight at keeper Marc Evans.

After surviving this scare it was Wulfs who opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Crudgington’s free kick into the area was headed goalwards by Mick Eagles and although keeper Sam Arnold saved well with his foot, Robin Sheffield was on hand to roll home the rebound.

Wednesfield continued to look lively and went close to an equaliser when Anton Johns turned well just outside the area before seeing his shot deflect on to the outside of the post and out for a corner.

Shortly before the interval Crudgington tried his luck with a 30 yard skidding shot that beat the scrambling keeper but also went past the upright.

Three minutes after the restart former Wulfs player Ian Boswell fired a rasping shot just wide before Wulfs extended their lead in the 52nd minute when defender Craig Frost slipped and Crudgington nipped in to round the keeper and slot home.

The joy was very short-lived as Wednesfield pulled a goal back within a minute. Lee Butler delivered a good near post corner which Anton Johns powerfully headed home.

Wulfs were fortunate not to concede an equaliser when Evans pushed McCrystal’s looping header on to the bar with Mark Tipton taking two attempts to clear the loose ball off the line.

The crucial third goal for Wulfs came in the 70th minute. Anslow caused havoc, dancing past three defenders before getting hauled down for a penalty which Crudgington duly despatched.

Wednesfield refused to give up and thought they had a penalty of their own when Jordan Perks was recklessly challenged in the area but the referee gave an indirect free kick form which Butler saw his shot deflected wide.

The game killing fourth goal for Wulfs came two minutes from time. Again Anslow was causing the problems but this time he was fouled six yards outside the penalty area. Crudgington completed his hat-trick with a pin-point strike into the corner of the net.
