Piggott completes late comeback

An injury time headed goal from young substitute Tom Piggott helped AFC Wulfrunians complete a late comeback to win 2-1 away at Hereford based Pegasus Juniors.

Wulfs almost got off to the perfect start for the second consecutive game when Ricky Anslow latched on to Robin Sheffield’s through ball but saw his shot half stopped by keeper Jon Pugh before Mark Davies got back to clear the goal-bound effort off the line for a corner.

Pegasus were next to threaten when Mike Olive’s low ball in from the left was inches away from being forced home at the far post by Jason Prosser.

Anslow then got in behind the home defence again and headed past the advancing keeper on the edge of the area before being crudely brought down for a free kick which came to nothing. Anslow, however, failed to recover from his injury and had to be replaced by Chris Rabone.

The home side were enjoying a strong wind at the back in the first half but their only other real effort came when Sammy Harrison won the ball in midfield to set up a 4-on-2 break but he opted to shoot from distance and his effort flew well wide.

With the wind at their backs, Wulfs hoped to enjoy more success in the second half but found themselves a goal behind just three minutes in when Harrison’s free kick into the area ricocheted to an unmarked Will Loughman who coolly rolled home from eight yards.

The game turned very scrappy but the introduction of Tom Piggott gave Wulfs a bit more life and he blocked an attempted clearance out of defence to give Danny Crudgington a sight of goal but his shot was weak and straight at the keeper.

Manager Tim Tipton made one last gamble, bringing off a defender and replacing him with striker Grant Joshua and the move had a positive effect as Wulfs struck an 84th minute equaliser. Marc Evans’ long ball forward was flicked on by Mick Eagles and Tom Piggott and Nathan Rose-Laing held off the attentions of a defender before firing past the keeper.

With the game deep in to injury time and a draw looking likely, Wulfs conjured up a late winner when Graham Ashton and Tom Piggott both challenged keeper Pugh for Crudgington’s left wing corner and the young striker got there first to head home from close range.
