Danny Crudgington was the hat-trick hero as AFC Wulfrunians beat 5th place Shawbury United 4-2 at the Castlecroft Stadium.
After dominating in the opening stages, Wulfs took an 11th minute lead when Chris Rabone’s cross was only half cleared to Crudgington and he fired home from a narrow angle.
Shawbury keeper Gary Turner had already pulled off a good save from a Mick Eagles header and then saved well with his foot after Crudgington’s defence splitting pass had put Rabone in the clear.
Gradually Shawbury began to work their way into the game and produced an equaliser four minutes before the interval. Sean Hennessy sent in a deep cross from the right and an unmarked Matt Owen stooped low to head home.
Parity lasted just two minutes as Wulfs regained their lead when Nathan Rose-Laing crossed deep for Robin Sheffield to send a high looping header across goal which dropped in at the far post.
Shawbury started the second half the brighter and went close when Stefan Holliday’s long range shot flew straight at keeper Raajan Gill before they found a second equaliser in the 52nd minute. Owen was again the scorer after Gill had pushed aside McGarvey’s long range deflected shot.
The visitors now looked the more lively of the two sides but they were again thankful to keeper Turner when he turned a Rose-Laing header over the bar.
As the game moved into the final seven minutes, Wulfs again took the lead. Richie Palmer’s ball down the right was flicked on by Mitchell allowing Crudgington to run through and fire past the keeper.
A fourth goal two minutes from time sealed the victory as Crudgington completed his hat-trick by intercepting an attempted header back to the keeper and firing home.
