Wulfs give Stafford a scare

Wulfs gave Evo-Stick Premier Division side Stafford Rangers an almighty scare before eventually slipping out of the FA Cup following a 3-2 defeat.

And all of this came after they got off to the worst possible start by falling a goal behind after just 39 seconds. Hesitant defender allowed Rob Stevenson to nip in and fire in a 25 yard shot with the aid of a big deflection.

In fact, the opening 15 minutes was totally dominated by Rangers and Raajan Gill was forced to make a good save from a Glynn Blackhurst header and Tony Collins was well placed to clear off the line when Neville Thompson did beat the young keeper.

Wulfs eventually broke the shackles when Ade Bandele fired a long range shot just over the crossbar.

After gaining confidence from this, Wulfs grabbed an equaliser in the 22nd minute when Chris Rabone slid a neat ball through to Danny Crudgington who finished with aplomb.

It got better still seven minutes later as Wulfs went into the lead. When Rabone took advantage of some defensive hesitancy to nip in and lift the ball over keeper Danny Read.

Rangers were limited mainly to long range efforts with Luke Chapman firing a shot just over and Sean Kinsella forcing Gill to tip a 35 yard shot wide and Wulfs held their lead in to the half time interval.

The backlash Wulfs feared at the start of the second half didn’t really materialise and they were holding out comfortably before conceding a soft equaliser in the 55th minute. A long throw from the left was headed on by Mike Douglas allowing Alan Nagington to fire home unchallenged at the fat post.

Rangers were enjoying the majority of the possession by now but were still restricted to long range efforts with Glynn Blackhurst twice and Neville Thompson firing shots just wide of the target.

Unfortunately, another of these efforts, from Thompson, flew in to the top corner to give Rangers a 78th minute lead which they never looked like losing in the remaining time.
